Toespraak van premier Yves Leterme onthulling monument Pat Mc Camy Williams en herdenking 'Memorial Day'

De (tweede) onthulling van dit monument voor de Amerikaanse piloot Pat Mc Camy Williams gebeurt samen met de herdenking van alle Amerikaanse gesneuvelden in alle oorlogen, Memorial Day. Dit is een mooi gebaar, want hiermee zeggen we: in de eer aan één mens die zijn leven gaf voor de vrijheid, eren we allen die hun leven hebben gegeven voor recht en democratie. Maar ook: hoe uniform een soldaat er ook mag hebben uitgezien, elke gesneuvelde had een naam en was een individu met verwachtingen en dromen.
Voor de gemeenschappelijke droom van vrijheid en democratie heeft hij zijn eigen dromen opzijgezet. Daarom is hij nog niet "anoniem" geworden, iemand zonder naam. In de eer aan de mens met de naam Pat Mc Camy Williams eren wij vandaag alle Amerikaanse gesneuvelden die in de vorige eeuw naar Europa kwamen om ónze droom van vrijheid te helpen realiseren.
Dit monument ter ere van piloot Pat Mc Camy Williams is een symbool van respect. Negen jaar geleden pas kreeg deze Amerikaan de begrafenis waar hij als mens recht op had, maar die de bezetter hem 59 jaar daarvoor niet had willen geven.
The memorial for Luitenant Pat Mc Camy Williams, near the spot where his plane crashed on May 31st of 1943, has the shape of Thunderbolt wing. Its upright position suggests that the plane is buried in the ground. But the wing is pointing to the stars, into the free sky. Freedom was the reason for which Luitenant Mc Camy Williams and the other pilots of the 56 Fighter Group came to Europe. Freedom was the reason for which America entered the European theatre of the Second World War.
But, like Connie Gibbs has written in her poem for Memorial Day, "freedom is not cheap". Many Americans paid for our freedom. They understood that their freedom and ours were joined. We still understand that our freedom and theirs are joined. Our transatlantic bond of values and hope is translated in NATO and in a strategic partnership between the European Union and the United States of America.
The European people and the American people are lucky peoples, for they enjoy their freedom. Many peoples in the world are not free. The hope president Woodrow Wilson expressed in his War Message of 1917 to "bring peace and safety to all nations and make the world itself at last free", is, almost a century later, not realised. That is the reason why we Belgians are prepared to do our share, as we do in Aghanistan and in the operations in Libya.
Our shared responsibility for a better world can be based upon the core values of the US Air Force to which Pat Mc Camy Williams belonged: Integrity First; Service Before Self; Excellence In All We Do.
